Measuring the heart rate (pulse) is one of the most important aspects when exercising.

By measuring the heart rate one can monitor whether their work out is effective and healthy. Monitoring your heart rate is especially crucial when endurance training. Current devices receive signals from a little transmitter that obtains the heart rate from a strap worn over the chest. This strap transmits the heart rate to the sport equipment or to a little watch that is worn on the wrist.

The goal when training with a heart rate monitor is to find individual limits and a positive balance between those limits and their goals. Monitoring the heart rate is particularily important for beginners or elderly athletes in order to prevent overexertion.

Aside from monitoring the heart rate, most of the devices today have a number of additional functions allowing one to meet every condition towards a fulfilling fitness session.
